Our April 2008 Meeting by Chris Agrippe, CPCE

The Return of the IRON FLORIST!

by: Chris Agrippe, CPCE:

Some of the best benefits of belonging to NACE can only be found at our monthly meetings… and by the end of the night on April 8th; EVERYONE who came to the House of Blues knew the names of over thirty-five of our chapter’s Event Specialists. New members were introduced and business relationships blossomed as we networked our way throughout the well-attended tradeshow and settled into plush lounge and cabaret seating to watch the main event… The Third Annual Iron Florist Competition.

Merrylin Brichmann utilized the amazing atmosphere created by the Delta Room's wall-to-wall Persian rugs and the Music Hall's folk art décor to host a San Diego NACE tradeshow complete with cocktails mixed by the House of Blues' "Bartenders to the Stars."

At 7:15pm our challengers took the stage to “gain the people's ovation and fame forever…” The competition was sponsored by Scott Carlson of Florabundance, one of the nation's premier floral providers, and our own Duffy Fainer Produced and Directed. This year's Iron Florist Contestants were: Patrick Higgins, Frankie Hartwell, Daniel Hansberger, Grace Fox, and Haydee De La Cruz-Weiner.

Duffy and Scott kept the program fun and educational as the seconds ticked down and our florists worked to finish their creations. Hi-Def Videographer husband and wife team Kyle and Kaiya Karges and Photographer Gabriel Hernandez were ever-present and did an amazing job of being in the right spot at the right time to get the best shot.

An evening that showcases the talents of so many members requires a huge commitment and lots of teamwork… and that’s what NACE is all about; a group of professionals joining together to provide Networking and Education, and having a whole lot of fun while they’re doing it!

Our esteemed Judges, Kristin Nigro, William Crandall and Scott Colvin deliberated long and hard, but once again, a "draw" was the best they could come up with. As in previous years, we called upon the auctioneer services of Mike Hogan to help us determine the "peoples choice"

This year’s winner was Patrick Higgins, with his majestic centerpiece and handblown Brasilian Vase. The proceeds benefiting the Survivors Rehabilitation Foundation.

Also, a heart-felt “thanks” and “well-done” to the Stage Crew at the HOB- Scott Munson, Sean Hart, Brett Solomon, Todd Jewell, Zach Young, and Luigi Grossi. These guys were a joy to work with. They provided us with the same level of service that one of their top name bands would receive. It was a real treat to work with them, and to anyone who’s ever been roughed up by a surly bunch of stage-hands, try holding your next awards ceremony at the HOB... you will be amazed at how easy they can make it and much fun you can have!

Affilliates Corner by Merrylin Brichmann

We had 23 event professionals showcasing their products this month. What a wonderful opportunity they took advantage of. Five of our florist members are featured right here!

Showcasing is easy…interested? Email me: artistic-productions@cox.net or call me at 619-593-7367 to get you on the schedule for 2008. It’s up to you to take advantage of this opportunity. I hope you do

The 2006-08 Winner of the Iron Florist, Patrick Higgins of Artistic Florals was born and raised in a log cabin in upstate New York. He moved to San Diego and has been here for over 25 years. He is a father, husband and a competitive distant runner. Always a good friend to everyone he meets, his smile and quick humor greet you along with his passion for life. His company has designed over 1,000 weddings and created over 500,000 designs in 20 years. Yes, he looks like he hasn’t aged much and his jokes are pretty corny…but his honesty, ethics and openness extends to all who touch his life. He truly loves his work and it shows!

Daniel Hansberger of Special Event Productions, our 2007 Iron Florist winner was born and raised in Norwalk, CA. He loves Disney, he loves Disney and by the way, he loves Disney! He has a dalmatian named Lucky, has been partnered for over 14 years, is talented, creative, hard working and loyal.

Haydee De La Cruz-Weiner from Haydee’s Creative Flowers & Weddings was born in the Phillipines. In 1983 she moved to America with her younger brother. She graduated high school in San Fernando Valley, CA where she met Brandon, who has been her husband for the last 20 years. They live in Clairemont with their 17 year old Cockatoo named COCO. She loves to travel and has been all over the world. She started her business 12 years ago and is now recognized as a very talented and creative florist, winning Bridal Insider Best Florist in 2007 and 2008s Channel 10 A-List winner.

Frankie Hartwell of Hartworks Floral Design has been married for 43 years, and is actively involved in the lives of her five children and her fifteen grandchildren. In her husband’s words, she always looks terrific, is a gourmet cook, everyone’s best friend and a great wife and companion. This talented and gracious lady received the Mrs. Congeniality Award in 2007 and it’s easy to see why. Hartworks Floral Design just celebrated its 20 year anniversary, growing from a cottage style, one woman enterprise to a highly successful business focusing on custom weddings and special events.

Grace Fox from Flower Girls is an attractive, friendly and vivacious young lady has three passions in life…Flowers, Surfing and the Environment. She was born in Redding, CA. and grew up as a CA beach bum. She is an active volunteer for the San Diego Surfrider Foundation. The San Diego/Imperial County Council of Girl Scouts developed this program in 2002, since it's creation they have sent 1,087,157 boxes of cookies overseas. They are sent to Military Troops in Iraq, Afganistan, Kuwait, Korea, the Persian Gulf, the Western Pacific and the Indian Ocean. This year our Chapter sent 55 boxes of cookies to the Troops, as the Girl Scouts say "NACE - Thank You for Your Support".
