Our May Meeting by Chris Agrippe CPCE

"Into the Heart of a NACE client" hosted by the Prado

by: Chris Agrippe, CPCE:

San Diego NACE meetings keep growing as our programs continue to wow attendees! Our April meeting was held at the Prado, and featured the legendary Event Designer Scott Corridan, who spoke to a sell-out crowd of NACE and ABC's members and guests. We couldn’t have picked a better location or a more picture-perfect spring day as we turn up the heat for summer! Marcy Melley and everyone at the Prado outdid themselves, and it was obvious that they had a lot of fun producing such an extraordinary evening.

The Prado Courtyard

Scott presented a half-day seminar entitled "How to Get to the Heart of a Client's Dreams" to a rapt audience which was followed by a reception in the Prado's Courtyard. Bars were set around the picturesque fountain in the center of the piazza, and everyone unwound from a busy day at the office seated at umbrella-topped tables. Hors d'Oeuvres were butler-passed, and included Port-Poached Pears with Gorgonzola & Organic Arugula, Ahi "Margaritas" with Cucumber-Mango Slaw, and Mini Kobe Beef Burgers with White Truffle Aoli.

Scott Corridan

We were chimed for dinner in the Prado Ballroom at 6:15pm, and guests drifted into a dreamy world of sumptuously rich chocolate brown linens accented with softly-hued caramels and ivory. The room was set with gold chivari chairs, and tables were draped with floor length custom-designed pin tuck fabrics, accompanied by gold chargers at each place setting. Clear cylinder vases filled with cascading orchids adorned the tables, and each centerpiece was pin spotted from above, adding height and drama to the opulently-lit room. The Robin Adler Jazz Quartet grooved softly in the background with an air of uptown sophistication, and we settled in for an evening of sensual delights.

The Prado Ballroom

The Prado banquet staff performed a flawless ballet of synchronized table service, and each course was perfectly presented to the delight of our culinary senses. Salad was pressed Organic Baby Arugula, Strawberries, and Candied Walnuts with Asiago and Aged Balsamic, followed by an Entrée of melt-in-your-mouth Braised Boneless Beef Ribs with Bittersweet Chocolate Espresso Demi-Glace, and Grilled Prawns with Charred Asparagus and Roasted Garlic Potatoes.
Dessert was actually part of the décor… when we entered we walked past a multi-tiered chocolaty-rich fondant wedding cake provided by Flour Power Bakery that was oh-so satisfying and served with demitasse afterwards.
With Scott Corridan's inspirational speech still fresh in our minds, it was befitting that our designated charity, Friends of Scott, was presented with two checks totaling $1500.00 raised through the generosity of our members over the past several months.
An event such as this is built upon generosity of our members. Special thanks for contributing to the success of the evening go to: Toby Russell of Velocity AV, Concepts Party Rentals, The Robin Adler Jazz Quartet, James with Flower Power, Sharon Mintz of Organic Elements, and Arlan with Stone brewing Company. Wine with Dinner was compliments of Pacific Wine Partners, Youngs Market and Pernon-Ricard USA providing choices of River Chardonnay, Blackstone Merlot and Hogue Genesis Cabernet Sauvignon.Additional dinner wine was compliments of ABC, San Diego Chapter, sweets from CJ's Confections, Dawn Nicoli Photography, ABI photograpy.

Next Meeting: LUNCH!! June 12 at the Estancia in La Jolla

Affiliates Corner by Merrylin Brichmann

I had the pleasure of introducing two incredibly talented members in May. Here’s a little information about each of them.

Sharon Mintz of Organic Elements is one of our newest NACE members, and grew up in Los Angeles. Her professional journey began over a decade ago at a fine Beverly Hills floral design studio, catering to celebrities and other discriminating clientele.

Her lush, contemporary style continued to evolve at several high end Los Angeles studios before completing her arts education abroad with six months study of various European Masters.

She took advantage of this opportunity to enjoy her other passion, traveling with her German fiancé. With education and experience in place, she returned to San Diego to launch her own business. With her unique design perspective and training, she has emerged as a remarkable stylist in the floral industry.

Mr. Dennis Way, of A Better Image Photography was born in Florida, grew up in New Orleans, graduated from high school in Wyoming and ended up in San Diego in 1976.
He joined the Navy as an Electronics Technician with a Photo-Reconnaissance squadron.

Thru the Navy, he traveled to Europe and Africa. He has a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology with a minor in organic chemistry. He has been married for 12 years to his lovely wife Karen, who is a staff seamstress at the La Jolla Playhouse. They met when Dennis was a dance instructor and Karen was one of his students.

He has a 22 year old son named Devin.
In his spare time, he enjoys riding his new BMW motorcycle with the rowdy members of the BMW Club. When he’s not out riding his bike or on the dance floor with his wife, he is out taking photos somewhere for someone.
He has been actively involved with NACE for 12 years and has worked at nearly every property represented here today. He’s unique, talented and always eager to make his brides and grooms feel relaxed and happy…
