President's Message
Winter 2006
by Tracey Amernick, CPCE
State of the NACE Address
It's hard to believe that we're already well into 2006, and from what we hear around town, everybody's been staying pretty busy these first couple months. Conferences and tourism are generating some excellent pieces of business and the social market is going strong.
The San Diego Chapter of NACE is also well under way, as we kicked off the year with our annual Board Retreat held on January 18th at the Radisson Hotel Harbor View. This was a full-day meeting for Board members to come together and plan for the upcoming year. This year's meeting saw a good mix of new and returning board members as we chose the direction our chapter would take for the next 12 months.
Some issues discussed were Finances, Membership, CPCE, Communications, Community Service, Scholarships, and Programs. One of the main focuses was to increase the size of our committees so that more members have the opportunity to be a part of the process, and to plan for succession. <more...>

| Our March Meeting
by Chris Agrippe, CPCE
For anyone who hasn’t watched the Japanese version of the Iron Chef, (on the Food Network, Monday through Friday at 11:00pm) our Iron Florist program at The House of Blues might have sounded... well... different. By the end of the night though, EVERYONE knew the importance of “the secret ingredient” as they cheered their favorite floral designers who sought to “gain the people's ovation and fame forever.“
The House of Blues has a state-of-the-art concert theater which was transformed into a TV Production Set that would make the Food Channel envious. Coat of Arms battle banners were donated by DreamWorld Backdrops and we named our arena “Ornamental Stadium”. It was here that the floral battle of the ages took place. It was fought by Carlos Morales of Hartworks Floral, Patrick Higgins of Artistic Florals, and Michelle Shaughnessy. The only question was: Can three florists take the exact same ingredients and end up with a different look? Creativity is a wonderful thing to behold, especially when you see it come to life on stage amidst the flying leaves, petals, and flowers. At the end of the performance we had three beautiful yet completely individual works of art that (to our surprise) were judged to be a tie!
Our emcees were Duffy Fainer and Mike Hogan, and another question was “Can two larger-than-life personalities share the same stage???” We were treated to another YES as they kept the audience laughing and learning at the same time. Duffy also created the twenty-minute long sound track and audio voice-overs which took many long hours to complete. Our Videographer was Brian Baron of Baron Productions, and photographs were taken by Larry Monet.
Combine this level of Edu-tainment with the down-home cookin’ and first-rate service provided by the House of Blues Catering team lead by Shannon Silva, and you come up with “one of the best presentations I’ve seen at any NACE dinner since I joined 13 years ago!”
The floral arrangements were auctioned off and proceeds went to benefit our chapter’s charity “Friends of Scott”. An evening that allows so many different members of our industry to interact is exactly what NACE is all about; A group of professionals joining together to provide Networking and Education, and having a whole lot of fun while they’re doing it! Also, a heart-felt “thanks” and “well-done” to the Stage and Technical Crew at the HOB.
These guys directed by Debbie Gonzales were a joy to work with. They were there every step of the way offering suggestions and assistance, and provided us with the same level of service that one of their top name bands would receive. They also did an absolutely killer job of running the sound and lights. It was a real treat to be there with them, and to anyone who’s ever been roughed up by a surly bunch of stage-hands, try holding your next awards ceremony at the HOB... you will be amazed at how easy they can make it and much fun you can have! |
Affiliate's Corner
by Merrylin Brichmann
Thank you to our amazing affiliates who participated in the Iron Florist Competition at Ornamental Stadium, aka The House of Blues!
Frankie Hartwell, from Hartworks Florist, looks forward every day to the sweet aromas from the flowers in her shop. She also takes time to raise her two youngest grandchildren who provide great joy and help keep her young. She also loves to travel. Her Iron Florist representitive was Carlos Morales, of Mexico City. 858-272-6392 www.hartworksfloral.com
Michelle Shaughnessy, of Michelle Shaughnessy Floral Design, spent much of her free time in the 60s, jumping into the ocean off Sunset Cliffs or strolling down Newport Avenue in her floral hip hugger pants. At the height of the “hustle” dance craze, she graduated from Pt. Loma High School, then from San Diego State. Tuesday night everyone watched Michelle, our newest member, partake in the culmination of a 22 year career dream: to compete in a prestigious, one-of-a-kind floral competition. 760-944-1434
